Terror Web Watch

In the past year, terrorists have made increasing use of the Internet. Insurgent attacks in Iraq are regularly followed with postings of specific group claims of responsibility, descriptions of details of the operations, and sometimes videos of the operations themselves along with biographies or interviews with the "martyrs" who carry out attacks. Supporters worldwide offer back feedback, praise, and sometimes criticism. Analyses of international politics are also offered up by terrorists groups and supporters, allowing an insight into their world view, beliefs, and strategies. Discussion boards fill with targeting advice and justifications - both religious and strategic - of striking various targets.

Leaders and visionaries in among the international al-Qaeda and Mujahideen movement have seen their traditional, secure communication lines disrupted by the Global War on Terror and will, therefore, turn increasingly to the Internet as a way to disseminate advice and instructions to entrepreneurial cells with terrorist ambitions. The most prominent example of this was Bin Laden's December 16, 2004 speech, disseminated as an audio recording and a written transcript over jihadist websites, instructing militants to attack Saudi government targets and oil installations. Even the devastating Madrid train attacks in March 2004 are thought to have been inspired by an Internet directive. A piece of political analysis called "Jihadi Iraq," posted on one such website, is thought to have prompted a group of young North Africans in Spain to form a terrorist cell to carry out the bombings (a TRC proprietary translation of the 40-page "Jihadi Iraq" document is available by request). The analysis, which discusses how each major Coalition country may be coerced by terrorist violence to withdraw from Iraq, concludes that Spain would be the most susceptible. Months after its posting on a Mujahideen website, the Madrid train attacks were carried out.

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula

This is the propietary TRC Terrorist Group Profile of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. The profile is available for purchase as a secure PDF file for $30.00 USD.

Excerpt: "To abbreviate the name of the organization, most news reports shorten the name of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula to "al-Qaeda." This is misleading, however, as al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, though spawned by the original "al-Qaeda," has developed into a distinct group. Referring to the group as al-Qaeda also bestows upon it all the benefits of membership in the much mythologized, original al-Qaeda core. This only supports the exaggerated image that such a group wishes to create around itself after al-Qaeda."
